After Some Thought

Well, after lots of consideration I have changed my Flickr account so that my photostream is only visible to people I designate as friends.

It is true that once you put pictures out there on the internet you have no control over what someone does to them and while I can accept that to some degree, I also think I have to make an effort to make it more difficult for people to take them.

At least that is what I think right now at this moment. I may change my mind. I might watermark them. The pictures that is, not the children. Though now that I think about it, it might just be easier to write in permanent marker on the kids' foreheads than to add a watermark to each individual photo.

I did email the flickr people, for those of you who have asked me, and told them I thought they should ban him from using flickr. They haven't responded yet. I don't expect much, there isn't anything illegal in what the man did, as creepy as it might be.

So if you want to be a friend and I don't already have you designated as one, send me an email.

Then I can invite you over for slumber parties, where we can do each other's hair, make prank phone calls to all the cute boys, tell stories and giggle loudly until my parents kids come downstairs and tell us to keep it down, or else! Oh, and put the bra of whoever falls asleep first in the freezer!

And of course we could take pictures and I could put them up on my website where someone will find them searching for women sleeping together, and then we could collectively freak out and begin the hand wringing anew.

Chris,
I think anyone can still get to your pictures by clicking on the Flickr collage on your sidebar. At least I can. I AM a friend, but a silent one, so I'm guessing that's an unintended way to your pictures for right now?

Chris,

I am so sorry!

When I first saw flicker here, I signed up to be able to make it easier for my family to see pictures of our family. After reading last nights post, I went to change it from public to friends and family. It didn't change the way people could view the pictures I already had, so I deleted them so I can start over...UUGGHH!!

I would love to be cosidered an IF ( internet friend) Although that sounds kinda bad.....I'll start the pillow fight!! :-) and bring the chips..

((((Huggs)))))

I'm sorry that happened to you. If it's any consolation, I think you're doing the right thing and handling it well.

I'm so sorry to hear about all of this!

I know that flickr probably won't do anything about him, but they should. Every time I tag my photos I stop to pause - what are folks looking for when they come to me?

So in pictures of kids I tend not to tag them as "the babies" as I call them. It seems to have helped, but then, I doubt people I don't know actually look at my photos lol

Good luck!

Good for you for taking action, I hope it helps. I can still get into your pictures from the flickr link on your sidebar, but only to the older pictures, not to the most recent ones. Good luck getting it all straightened out. ick ick ick

Chris,
I am so sorry about your daughter. After you posted about the weirdo, I went to MSNBC Dateline online, and OMG! I watched all the videos of the pedophiles. I am sure you have watched. I COULD NOT believe what I was seeing.I actually felt ill afterwards. I think you should report this guy to Perverted-Justice just as a heads up maybe? I can imagine how frustrated you must be with Flickr. I am Cancelling mine due to them not cooperating with sickos. Hope all goes well. Sending big internet (((hugs))) your way!

Hi Chris,
I commented earlier on your pics. I would love to be able to continue see them as I read your blog. You not only have a talent for photography, you write well, also. Many of your experiences mimic my life as my children grew. Thanks for the add, ahead of time.

Kimberly, although it's a bit more effort, you could have gone through your photos and changed the status individually instead of deleting them. :-( Oh, well...maybe this will help someone else who's thinking of doing the same thing.

I changed mine to friends and family.

Did you say you banned that guy?
I saw where you could do that.

How disgusting.

Hi :0)
I drop in alot and love reading your blog. I also can click into photo's from the flickr sidebar. It is so disgusting that the world has come to this :0( I have 2 boys and have been considering starting my own blog about my family, however photo's would be a big part of it. I am still considering it. Although I have enjoyed your family pics I will certainly still be dropping by most days! Also I am really enjoying the posts that you girls(Mom To The Screaming Masses) are doing on your families. I look forward to the next one!

I am always amazed how sick people are. I dont know why but I guess we just never think that it could happen to us.

Sorry that you have to make your flickr site private but I understand why!

I will send you an email.

I'm so sorry this happened Chris. When our oldest was about 3 years old, we found that some creep had taken photos of her in her bathing suit from our website and posted them on some kiddie porn type site. You know how we found out? He emailed us himself and told us. What a freak. We told him to take them off, and he supposedly did. We didn't put photos up for awhile and when we did, we were careful about what we shared. We aw the Dateline show, too and it really creeped me out.

Anyway, please consider me a friend and add me to your friend list. I love your photos (they are so good)! I also like looking at your cute kids (but in a normal way).

Hi Chris,

I noticed that I could still view your pictures when I clicked on your Flickr sidebar, and the notes underneath the photos say that they are, indeed, public.

I have delurked a few times to tell you how much I enjoy your blog. How horrible that you have to restrict who views your photos...what a world. I too enjoy looking at the pictures, but not in the creepy sense. Kudos to you for protecting your kids!

Chris, this is really sad and so scarey! It's the sign of our times we are living I suppose. I would like to be added as a friend if you would be so kind. I have a flickr badge and am wondering if I should maybe just delete the whole thing. Hmmmm.

UGH, Chris, that is awful and disgusting. Now I am off to peruse my random flickr contacts, because I'm afraid that some of the requests I've received are psychos.

You poor thing, you are doing the right thing. GRRRR.

Decided to de-lurk to express my support for your decision to protect your photos (and kids) from creepy child-lovin' fat men. Also glad to hear that you contacted Flickr though I would guess that their hands are pretty much tied. Love your blog!
