Let The Sun Shine In
Autumn signals a lot of different things.
Cool crisp days, which mean you can wear pants and forgo daily leg shaving.
Dragging out all the winter clothes and taking inventory of what is needed, while wondering how children can possibly grow so quickly.
Leaves on the trees that turn beautiful shades of gold and red that need to be raked into piles or, my personal alternative, leaf blown into the neighbor's yard.
Picking apples and buying wildly overpriced pumpkins to carve into jack-o-lanterns.
It also means, for us, finishing up all the home improvement projects that we intended to finish in the warmer weather, but didn't. Now we have no choice but to work ourselves crazy trying to finish them up. This year it is scraping, reglazing, painting, and reinstalling windows. Too many windows.
So many windows, in fact, that we have contemplated the unthinkable, on more than one occasion.
I'll ask, "Rob, do we really need so many windows?"
"Probably not. The kids just smudge them all up with their sticky little fingers anyway."
"I have an idea... Why don't we get rid of the window and wall it up!"
"Let's wall them all up!" he will shout and toss his tools down.
"Think of the savings in heat," I will say.
"We can pretend we live in a cave"
"Never be bothered by that pesky sunshine"
"I hate it when it makes a glare on the television," Rob will add.
"Sunshine is so over rated."
"Vitamin D too."
"Who needs sun, isn't that why god invented electricity?"
"It was on the 8th day. God said, "Let there be light indoors"
"Bored of all that resting in the dark He was."
"And it was good"
In the end, however, it is just all talk and we decide that keeping the windows is probably for the best. For resale value. But it doesn't stop us from having variations of this conversation over and over again.
I guess we are easily amused. Or else missing precious brain cells from working with chemical strippers.

You could SELL them for money to pay the heating costs this winter!
Oh yeah, didn't you guys PREpay?
Don't you feel smart as hell now?
I doubt our gas logs will see much action this year!
Thankfully down here it is not all that cold.
I am up to my elbows in wet, glue-y, sticky wall paper, while my husband rabidly tries to finish painting the garage.
I hear you on the mad rush to get it done!
i haven't seen a recent pic of your remodeling...how is it going?
i just weaned by youngest a couple months ago, sad for me b/c i had no choice and i think 10 months is too young. anyway, the boobs have BARELY gotten smaller, so maybe you will be in luck and have prunes instead of raisins?
(sorry to combine comments onto the same post!)
Maybe just board the windows over? That should keep your resale value intact :-)
Re the boobs - when Soph eventually weaned I'd been nursing for well over a decade, and mine stayed the same size. So there is hope :-)
My kids love using those Windex wipes to clean the windows. They honestly BEG me to let them clean the windows. Soemtimes i have to go back and "finish," but they at least manage to get the top layer of crap off!
Annalise,
you are a genius!
Buffi,
windex wipes? i have never seen these. i am going to have to look for them next time i am at the store
a,
the remodeling is coming along slowly. we have several projects that so close to being done i can taste it, and it's yummy.
Well, you've lived with the plastic, right? What difference would boards make? Try it!
I am considering sleeping in the living room all winter, boarding up the rest of the rooms. That way, we can just heat the room with firewood and save money on heat. Or wear gloves all the time.
I tried buying Tango (the little dog) a fleece full body suit so that we could save money on heat during the day, and he'll just stand in one place as soon as we put it on. FOR HOURS. He won't move for food, treats, pets, nothing. His humiliation over the outfit is so great. I guess our bill will have to be high.
halloweenlover,
i did just buy thick insulated curtains for my dining room, so hopefully that will make that one room feel warmer. But damn if curtains aren't expensive also, we were about to buy some for our sunroom which has 7 windows and a 6ft sliding glass door, but reconsidered when we realized the cost.
Having tried to do our own windows previously (this was both messy AND a danger to our health), the RO and I have decided that this time someone else will do it for us.
Of course this also means that we could go for completely impractical but oh-so-lovely designs as the headache will be someone else's :-)
